The 'Scars On The Heart' exhibition features a recreated scene from the Great War. It provides a staggering, realistic insight into times of conflict.

Auckland War Memorial is Auckland's first museum, and now resides in one of New Zealand's finest heritage buildings. This structurally impressive neo-classical building commands a striking presence and houses millions of objects, provides educational services, and attracts over half a million visitors a year.

The narrative of war and how it shaped New Zealand's identity makes for a compelling story.  The memorial aspect of the museum pays respect to fallen soldiers of World War I and World War II with a Sanctuary and Hall of Memories.  Other conflicts concerning New Zealand such as the land wars, Vietnam and Korea are also covered in exhibitions.

In addition to its role as a cornerstone of remembrance for those affected by war, the museum is a significant site of natural history and cultural resources. It aims to tell the story of New Zealand, its people, and its place in the Pacific.  Collections focus on a wide range of interests and topics, including Maori and Pacific, social and military history, and decorative arts.

Permanent and changing exhibitions contribute to a lively 'what's on' programme.  Visitors can also deepen their understanding of Maori culture with a Maori cultural performance.  The high-energy show features the Haka and encourages post-performance interaction between performers and audience.  As an optional extra, performers will then take visitors around the Maori gallery giving them a guided tour and putting their own heritage into context.

Opening Times:

Monday to Sunday (except Christmas Day): 10.00am - 5.00pm.
